This rod was made for Everett L. Ellis in 1967 by San Francisco rod makers Doug Merrick and Gary Howells. The name as well as serial number have been written on this rod right above the handle. This is a legitimate RL Winston cane rod. It is rated to throw a 5/6 wt. line. This rod has been fished all over the world. From Alaska to Wyoming, even to the streams of New Zealand. This rod truly is a wonderful piece of fly-fishing history. This rod comes in the original sleeve and tube.
This rod is in great condition for it’s age. The ferrules are nice and tight. The butt section is nice and straight. One of the tip sections has been repaired and is misaligned at the 3 ½ inch span between the last guide and the tip guide. The other tip section has not been repaired and is in good shape.
This vintage 5/6 weight Winston Bamboo rod is the perfect all around trout rod.

Years of design refinements, testing, study, plus knowledge that has been passed down from rod builder to rod builder go into every one. A YEAR IN THE MAKING
There are no shortcuts in making a bamboo fly rod. The process takes up to a year, a fair amount of time in this age of "now." But that's what is required, for there are hundreds of steps involved. Bamboo culms are selected for straightness, diameter, fiber density and node matches. The culms are hand split so that the strips follow the natural grain of the bamboo. Next is node sanding, then strip grading, then heat tempering and taper cutting to 1/1000 of an inch, followed by fluted hollowing, gluing, and varnishing. Only now is it ready to fish.

Although the majority of rods produced today are graphite, they still manufacture bamboo. Only 100 bamboo rods are made by the company each year, a testament to the time put into their individual creation.
In the 1950's the company began to develop fly rods made of fiberglass. Created by one of Winston's true innovators, Doug Merrick, the 'glass' rods produced during that time have become collectables. Today, in an effort to enable the modern fly fisherman to taste what once was, the company reintroduced a fiberglass series of rods, the Winston Retro.
Winston has managed to employ their decades of experience building rods in the company's current rod designs. Maintaining the soul that has always been present in their rods, Winston produces some of the industry's finest graphite rods using the industry's most advanced materials. While at the same time maintaining the soul that has always been present in their rods. Today, Winston offers rods for every fishing application. They currently have over nine separate rod series. The Winston line can accommodate the needs and wants of every angler. Payment
We accept Paypal, Visa/Mastercard/Am. Express (by telephone, too), money orders and cashiers checks. Any money orders and cashiers checks sent to the shop must be made to the attention of “Upgrade Program” or Ian. This will allow for quick payment, shipment with no confusion or delay. Please let us know to you are paying with a money order or cashiers check as soon as possible.
Payment arrangements must be paid for within one week of the sale date unless the buyer contacts us for special consideration. Buyers will receive a payment reminder after one week, and the item will be offered to another bidder or relisted the following week. We understand and work with special circumstances but not without notice from the buyer.
Shipping
We do our absolute best to make sure each item sold ships as soon as the payment clears; however, the majority of our listings end over the weekend, which means they cannot ship until Monday. Please plan your shipping choices accordingly. (i.e., Two-day shipping for an item that ends on a Saturday means it will arrive Wednesday, the second day after Monday.)
For international buyers, please be mindful of the tube length of the rod on which you are bidding. For example, shipping a two piece rod (56 inch tube length) to Australia is only available through UPS, not US Postal Service. Our shipping rates are priced to account for the item, packing material, the box and a little gift from us.
All shipment tracking information is stored in the “notes to the buyer” section on the day it ships. Please let us know if you have any questions.
Leland Warranty
Because nearly all manufacturers’ warranties are only valid for the original owner, we offer the Leland 18-month warranty for the rods of the brand we carry in our shop (Sage, Winston, Thomas and Thomas and Scott). We carry G. Loomis in our shop, but they have a very reasonable warranty policy for non-original owners. Our Leland Warranty covers all repairs (minus shipping) for the first 18 months. We know how frustrating it is to snap a rod in the car door. We can help.
