Moots YBB Superbike

Here sits hallowed ground. Evidence of the birth and evolution of mountain biking. This is the real deal. A Moot's YBB, one of the most expensive and celebrated mountain bike designs ever created, in absolutely beautifully condition. As you likely know, "YBB" stands for "Why Be Beat". This is an odd name for a bicycle but since this models inception in 1991 it has proven apropos as this is simply one of the fastest race machines ever made and one of the most copied as well. But as flattering as the duplication of this design has been for Moots, what has kept these bikes unique is the people who make them. Give Moots a call on the phone in Steam Boat Springs Colorado and 9 times out fo 10 a live person will pickup the phone! No automated voice mail to "better serve you" or some bad elevator music as you wait on hold for an hour. This is the first evidence you get that Moots is different. The next sign that you are dealing with a company with real soul is the customer service. They offer all sorts of options and upgrades to your Moots including a refurbishment program that can completely update your frame as time and technology dictate...something that can't be done with carbon or aluminum framed bikes. Lastly, it's the quality that sets Moots apart from just about all the other Ti builders. The welds are, in a word, perfection. I had always thought Merlin and Litespeeds welding was the best...until I saw my first Moots. It was like it came from another planet. Stunning. Welding so good that it's almost invisible leaving the bike looking as though it was widdled from a single block of Titanium.

History:
Some history on what is one of the most sought after mountain bikes in the world.... Kent Eriksen rolled into Steamboat Springs, Colorado in July, 1975 after having toured North America and Mexico by bicycle for the two years following his high school graduation. He opened a bike shop in town a year later: Sore Saddle Cyclery. He was only 21 and was already considering what might happen if someone built a bicycle designed specifically for off-road riding. As the story is told, Eriksen was looking for fun, and that’s really the premise behind the creation of his first bike and eventually the company that has come to be known for their production of the worlds finest titanium mountain bikes. In 1978, Kent began building his own custom frames for balloon tires with multiple gears and cantilever brakes. Kent’s invention of the “Moot’s Mount”, an adjustable cantilever brake stud patented in 1980 led to the development of the Moot’s Mountaineer bicycle. This bike went on to win the first NORBA Off-Road National Championships in Solvang, Califonia. In 1984, Kent invented what we now call bar-ends; those nifty, multi-position gadgets found on so many mountain biker’s handlebars today. In 1986, Kent’s futuristic thinking guided him to develop rear suspension for his bikes called YBB (Why Be Beat). So simple in its design and effective that in 1995 Hall of Famer, Tom Ritchey, started incorporating Kent’s design and parts on his top-of-the-line XC bikes. Kent’s source of inspiration for his innovations came from years of mountain bike racing. In 1984, he finished 5th in the Nationals at Boulder, Colorado. In the past ten years, Kent has been a top-ten finisher in the Colorado Off-Road Point Series, finishing second in 1994

Stellar Performance: Climb on and go and you’ll be amazed that this featherweight frame also provides jaw-dropping performance. Sprint, climb, hammer, spin and you’ll swear the YBB is alive, reacting to every pedal stroke, helping you motor. It’s the combination of a frame material that has a springy, “alive” quality and Moots hand made craftsmanship. Through years of racing they’ve refined the design to offer amazing ride and efficiency tradeoffs.

Bump Buster: The rear suspension consists of a spring/elastomer offering just over an inch of rear wheel travel. This subtle compliance is the difference between the brutality of a standard hardtail and a YBB. It is a FANTASTIC race bike. The crazy thing is, it’s race ready bike but at the same time, the ride is very good. No it doesn't offer 4 inches of travel but it doesn't offer the weight penalty or complexity either. If I had to have one bike to race in a brutal 24 hour event, it's this bike. If I was faced with a ride where reliability was paramount, this is the bike I choose. It's just soft enough to take the edge off without loosing it's ability to put your power down. You feel it right away. The YBB sings as you spin down singletrack, the frame seeming to contribute to each pedal stroke. This thing just lunges for corners and adheres on climbs. These bikes offer truly magical performance.

Terrific Ti: I have told you what makes a Moots special. It's performance traits set the Moots YBB's apart from lesser dream rigs. But Moots titanium frames offer another wonderful perk: the magic metal won’t rust or corrode and is impressively dent-resistant. What’s more, due to the paintless finish, the surface can’t chip. So, you can ride for three hours in the rain on bad trails and, while you might trash your components, with just a little scrubbing, the frame will be perfect again. And say you don’t get around to cleaning the bike right away (about the worst thing you can do after a rainy ride), every steel part on your bike will likely rust (which is what would happen to the frame too, if it were steel) but the Moots is completely unfazed by the elements. Fact is, it’s likely this frame will be going strong long after you.

The the drivetrain is a mix of high end components including Shimano XTR dérailleurs front and rear, XTR "pod" shifter/brake levers and Avid BB7 disc brakes that offer the modulation and power of full hydraulic brakes, without the maintenance and weight penalties. Cranks are Shimano XT with 44/32/22 chainrings. An FSA carbon seatpost carries a brand new Selle Italia Signg saddle. Up front is a Rock Shox Dart 3 fork with lockout. This is not the lightest fork on the market by any means and this bike would definitely enjoy a lighter unit up front but the 100mm Dart is predictable and very reliable. A Thompson stem holds fast to a Easton EA70 bar. Finally a top drawer Chris King headset tops it all off. I told you this was a dream bike!

Wheelset is Mavic's fantastic SL SSC's. These wheels weigh just 1685grams thanks to it's unique silver anodized Maxtal SUP™ welded rim and Zicral spokes. I believe these wheels are tubeless as well allowing better performance since tire pressures can be regulated according to the terrain. At $830, these are some seriously expensive wheels! Wheels are like new with minimal (if any) ride time on them. Tires are new as well... WTB Weirwolf's.

The bikes condition, as you can see, borders on perfection. This bike is truly in excellent condition with many of the components on the bike in new and unridden condition. It was built by a certified bicycle mechanic with an eye towards detail and hung on the wall, rarely if ever ridden. This bike looks and rides amazing and is nearly flawless, both mechanically as well as cosmetically. Decals are in outstanding condition and there is little if any cable rub. And of course, there are no dings or dents in the frame of any kind. It shifts with that crispness that a bike like this should and can make good riders great and great riders champions. The new owner will be very happy with this bike!

The frame is a 20 inch. Seat tube length is 20" and the bikes stand over height is 31.25 inches. The bikes reach measures 29 inches (As measured from the center of the seat tube to the center point of the where handlebars attach to the stem) and the top tube length is 23" actual and 24" effective. Terms Of Auction

First, I offer no international shipping. Don't ask, the request will be denied. Overseas fraud and high shipping costs prohibits it. If you are overseas and HAVE to have a bike you see simply make sure the bid you are placing is coming from within the U.S. (Ebay blocks foreign bidders on our listings) and that the ship to address is in the 48 continuous United States. I am happy to ship the bike to a friend or family member so long as they are here on domestic soil. Payment expected within 5 days of auction close. If you cannot pay in this period of time please contact me and we'll work out something convenient for you. I'm easy to deal with and want any transaction I'm involved in to not only be smooth but also a pleasurable experience. Shipping will be $65 and that includes
INSURANCE
. Please allow up to 15 business days for the bike to be packed and an additional 4 days for FedEX insured delivery. Every so often I will get an email with regards to my shipping policies. To clarify these policies and time periods I can tell you the following.... I hand pack the bikes myself using FedEX approved, BIKE SPECIFIC boxes. All bikes are packed using new packing materials. All bikes are shipped with proper bicycle specific shipping boxes with plastic packing supports in place to protect the bike from crushing side loads often experienced shipping. These include the installation of plastic fork supports to keep the front fork from penetrating the bottom of the box, dérailleur side load supports and axle shields to keep the axle of the wheels from penetrating the side of the box. The bike is then PHOTOGRAPHED in its packed state before being boxed. Also, I insert a SECOND SHIPPING LABEL in every box in case the original label is somehow pulled off the box. This ensures that the bike will make it to it's destination. Lastly the box is sealed with industrial box staples to keep the load securely enclosed. (These are steps that other sellers on eBay just won't do.) Oh and if you think FedEX insurance covers the bike while under their care, think again! The last thing FedEX wants to do is sign off on a claim of damage for a bike that costs as much as my bikes. They will say "No" for the simplest of reasons. That is why I cover all the bases. I take EVERY precaution to make sure this bike is not only packed correctly but is also covered for TRUE insurance. The second reason I require the time I request to ship a bike is that I have a job and family just like many of you. I do all packing of a bicycle on the weekend as it takes a significant block of time. Bikes that are shipped on the weekend go out on Tuesday or Wednesday. (FedEX Home Delivery is closed Sundays and Mondays) Also, I do not ship when it is raining. I find that a wet bike box doesn't ship as well as a dry one. All these steps may lengthen the time to ship out but the one thing I can say that few others can is that my bikes will make it to you as promised, as advertised and in EXACTLY the condition that it left my home in. Packing a bike is something that takes experience and taking short cuts will only land you in the nightmare of the FedEX claims department which can take months to resolve. Better to do it right the first time I always say. All bikes require a signature upon delivery. Bikes are not packed until payment is received. Local pick-up is always available. Oh and a note to other ebaY sellers who do not allow for local pickup.... Your one of the small handful of things that give ebaY a bad name. Take your smoke and mirrors show somewhere else. As a buyer and seller on ebaY I find your underhanded profit tactics a disgrace and not at all in the spirit of what ebaY is... an open marketplace. I take PayPal payments sent to
echarnho@san.rr.com.
or money orders. If paying by money order, please contact me post auction for mailing address. Paying with PayPal will expedite shipping. Pedals are not included with the bike as I figure anyone looking at this level of equipment already has a favorite pedals system. Feel free to contact me anytime with any questions you may have. My phone number (858.775.7878) is listed for a reason. I not only invite your calls but I love talking bikes. There is no such thing as a stupid question so feel free to ask by email OR phone. Lastly, If you have zero (0) or negative feedback, I ask that you contact me first before bidding. I reserve the right to cancel bids from such members.
